Ohio State football adds Alabama transfer safety off of freshman All-American season

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio State football defense loaded with veteran starters made one of the biggest transfer additions of the offseason Friday night. Per multiple reports, Alabama safety Caleb Downs committed to Ohio State. The Buckeyes’ staff, which felt it had come in a close second for Downs prior to his freshman All-American season, made a hard push for him again after he entered his name in the transfer portal this week. Ohio State won out over Georgia, Downs’ home-state program. The Bulldogs also recently added former Alabama cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson as its safeties coach. Downs may have been the best true freshman defensive player in the country, totaling 107 tackles with three pass breakups and two interceptions.
