COLUMBUS, Ohio — The summer Devin Brown learned about “burning the boats,” the future Ohio State football quarterback tried not to burn his hands. Arizona’s COVID-19 restrictions in the summer of 2020 prevented Queen Creek High School players from working out indoors. So strength coach Joel Anderson and others dragged every piece of equipment possible out to the dirt and grass practice field. Dumbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, weight benches — all baking as afternoon temperatures to 100 degrees and beyond. When players finished pushing blocking sled, they covered it with a towel to shield it from the sun. “It definitely took those boys through the refinery fire — literally,” Anderson said. “That Arizona summer is brutal.” Anderson does not remember from where he grabbed the “burn the boats” mantra.
