Why Ohio State’s botched fake punt at Rutgers happened, and did Ryan Day consider a special teams shakeup?


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said a “gray area” in communication resulted in a mistaken fake punt attempt in last Saturday’s 35-16 win at Rutgers. Tuesday’s pre-Michigan State press conference continued a recent trend of Day answering about special teams errors. However, he said he had not considered making a change involving special teams coordinator Parker Fleming. “We’re all evaluated every single time out there,” Day said. “It’s not just the coordinator. … Clearly everybody is in charge of special teams. There’s a lot of coaches involved. We can all do a better job.” In the second quarter at Rutgers, punter Jesse Mirco took the snap on fourth-and-5 at the OSU 30, tucked it and ran for the sticks.
