Why Kyle McCord didn’t grade out as a champion in Ohio State’s win over Rutgers


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kyle McCord has his most efficient day as Ohio State’s starting quarterback on Saturday in a 35-16 win over Rutgers. But it was also his least productive in terms of yards. McCord completed 19 of 26 passes (73.1%) — breaking a school record in the process — for three touchdowns but failed to go over 200 passing yards for the first time this season with just 189. He didn’t push the ball down the field nearly as much as you’d expect from an offense with a receiver room that the Buckeyes have as none of them have more than 31 yards. That isn’t the norm here. But it also shows the growth of a quarterback who though in his third year year has only started 10 games.
