Rutgers football’s upset bid of Ohio State falls short after missed opportunities mounted


Rutgers was moving the ball and Ohio State looked like it could do nothing to stop it. Holding a stunning 9-7 halftime lead, the Scarlet Knights’ dormant offense was marching downfield, converting first down after first down. Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt converted a nine-yard pass to wide receiver JaQuae Jackson, the Buckeyes committed a defensive pass interference, Big Ten leading rusher Kyle Monangai had back-to-back double-digit yard carries and suddenly, the hosts were back in the red zone. Then came the recurring mistake that killed Rutgers in its two losses this season once again. Wimsatt overthrew a lofted pass to Monangai, forcing the running back to dive. He collided violently with Josh Proctor, and after the ball bounced off the Ohio State safety, it was intercepted by Jordan Hancock and returned 93 yards for a touchdown.
