COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State has already found itself having to rely on true freshmen in moments this season and it may be preparing to do so again. Malik Hartford first stepped in for Josh Proctor to start against Youngstown State, but it was clear he wasn’t ready for that much responsibility that early in the season. But the play of others suggests that with a little more time, he could be ready to do so now. Carnell Tate has been asked to do something similar at wide receiver as he shares WR3 duties with Xavier Johnson. He came into the season having already proven he deserved meaningful playing time, but this extended opportunity in the absence of Emeka Egbuka has allowed him to flash.
