Ohio State’s cornerbacks are unlocking the final phase of Jim Knowles’ defense


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jim Knowles came to Ohio State known for his willingness to constantly send pressure at opposing offenses and he lived up to that reputation from his very first snap as defensive coordinator. That snap also set a tone for the 2022 season that would eventually cost the Buckeyes a win over Michigan, a Big Ten championship and possibly even a national championship. He sent Denzel Burke on a blitz in which then-Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner sniffed out but what should’ve been just a gain for six or seven yards turned into a 54-yard play. That scenario of Knowles sending a blitz and someone in the second turning a bad situation into a worst-case scenario showed up time and time again last season.
