COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said last spring he expected Cody Simon to play more this season. He reiterated that point Tuesday after the fifth-year senior played a season-high 21 snaps in the 37-17 victory over Maryland. All but three of those came at the expends of starting Will linebacker Steele Chambers. “Cody’s earned more,” Knowles said. “I’ve got to keep pushing his reps up.” Back in the spring, Knowles said he wanted to use Simon to help Chambers and Mike linebacker Tommy Eichenberg avoid wear and tear over the course of the season. You could make the case he deserves a longer look based on performance. Ohio State has platooned linebackers before — though the examples predate Knowles.
