'Gene was a great leader and teammate': Urban Meyer, Ohio State coaches reflect on Gene Smith

Many Ohio State coaches and athletic administrators have felt the impact of Gene Smith. After the Ohio State athletic director announced he would retire effective June 30, 2024, many coaches and administrators who worked with Smith praised his tenure with the Buckeyes as their eighth athletic director in program history. In his tenure with Ohio State, the Buckeyes have won 32 team and 117 individual national championships, including winning the first College Football Playoff in 2014, three men’s volleyball national titles and a wrestling national championship.
