Can three-loss Ohio State football teams make a 12-team playoff? Hey, Nathan!


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football remains the only team that would have qualified for a 12-team field had one existed throughout the College Football Playoff era. Instead, the Buckeyes have been on the outside looking in (four) almost as many times as they qualified for the tournament (five). Sometimes it took only a single loss, such as 2015 against Michigan State or 2018 against Purdue. Neither the 2017 or 2021 Buckeyes had the resume to be the first two-loss entry in a four-team playoff. When the 12-team format begins after the 2024 season, no longer will a single loss or probably even two be catastrophic for a team’s playoff hopes.
