Jun. 13—Ohio State continued a recent trend Monday with the verbal commitment of New Jersey native Jaylen McClain. The Buckeyes have signed 10 players from the Garden State since 2013, the first full year of a recruiting under Urban Meyer, after signing two in the 10 years before that. While Jim Tressel signed only a pair of players from New Jersey — cornerback Malcolm Jenkins of Piscataway and running back/defensive back Ira Guilford of Hoboken — during his tenure (2001-10), John Cooper did dip into the state a bit more often. Cooper signed eight players from New Jersey from 1988-2000. That group included three future starters — quarterback Stanley Jackson (Patterson Catholic), offensive lineman Jason Winrow (Seabrook Cumberland) and defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman (Rancocas) — along with defensive lineman David Thompson, a Patterson native who was a key reserve on Tressel’s 2002 national championship team.
