COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tanner McCalister brought great value to Ohio State football’s 2022 defense before ever playing a down. The transfer from Oklahoma State served as the translator, lecturer and hands-on facilitator as the Buckeye secondary learned Jim Knowles new-to-them system. Despite playing through injury for part of the season, he provided some stability in the middle of a defense in transition. While those traits have value in the NFL, McCalister still had to stack up physically when the time came. He did, and now he waits to see if he can become a rarity in Ohio State draft history — an overlooked prospect who makes a late run to the back end of the draft.
