Ryan Day did not make the official announcement until Aug. 21. He needed to keep the competition level high in that room to maximize the talents of Stroud, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller III. With a lack of experience among those contenders, the longer the competition, the better. Day’s recent comments suggest neither McCord nor Devin Brown has separated enough during the current competition to seize the job this week. On the other hand, Saturday’s spring game is a special opportunity. In a real stadium with something more resembling real football, the stakes begin to feel more real as well.
