Jaques, an all-time great, has just wrapped her career at Ohio State | Michael Arace

This is about Sophie Jaques, one of Ohio State’s, and women’s college hockey’s, greatest athletes, ever. Jacques is a winner, with an NCAA title in 2022 and a runner-up finish this year. She is also a trailblazer as the first Black athlete, and only the second defenseman, to win the Patty Kazmeier Memorial Award. The Kaz is the Hobey Baker (or Heisman, if you like) of women’s hockey.  Ohio State’s sports history is so rich that, when arguing about the greatest Buckeyes of all time, you can put a track athlete (Jesse Owens) on the board with a golfer (Jack Nicklaus) before you even begin to talk about the only two-time Heisman winner in history (Archie Griffin) or members of the Basketball Hall of Fame (Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek, to name two).
