COLUMBUS, Ohio — Zak Herbstreit continued his family’s legacy as an Ohio State football preferred walk-on in the 2021 incoming class. On Wednesday, the son of former quarterback and ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit officially became a Buckeye. The second-year tight end had his black helmet stripe removed. Zak Herbstreit is the third generation of his family to play for OSU. His grandfather, Jim, was a running back and captain of the 1960 team. Kirk Herbstreit was also a captain and starting quarterback of the 1992 team that finished No. 18 in the final AP poll. Zak Herbstreit came to OSU as a preferred walk-on from Nashville’s Montgomery Bell Academy. He provides depth in a tight end room that currently has six other scholarship players.
