COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Dick LeBeau accepted the Ohio’s Finest award at April’s Ohio State Football Coaches Clinic, he reminisced to another moment of recognition 65 years earlier. In 1957, the halfback and cornerback from nearby London said he was named the Buckeyes’ outstanding player of the spring. “That meant I was the only guy left who could walk up and get the trophy,” LeBeau said. LeBeau played on OSU’s claimed 1957 national championship team and was drafted in the fifth round of the 1959 NFL Draft by the Browns, but cut during training camp. He latched on with the Detroit Lions and spent 14 seasons with the franchise, including three Pro Bowl selections. He is best known for his 45-year tenure as an NFL coach, primarily with the Bengals and Steelers, including six Super Bowl appearances and two championships.
