Tanner McCalister is first Ohio State football player to lose black stripe this spring


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tanner McCalister jumped right into a leadership role among Ohio State football’s defensive backs soon after transferring in from Oklahoma State. As a multi-year starter in Jim Knowles’ defense there, McCalister also projects as a starter in the defense OSU’s new defensive coordinator is installing this spring. So it comes as no surprise that McCalister became the first player to lose his black helmet stripe. The ceremony, which signals a player’s arrival as a true Buckeye, came after OSU’s fifth practice of the spring. McCalister played 41 games over his four seasons with the Cowboys before joining OSU as a graduate transfer. He recorded 42 tackles with his first career interception last season. Oklahoma State ranked No. 4 nationally in total defense, reached the Big 12 championship game and played in the Fiesta Bowl.
