COLUMBUS, Ohio — Initial claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance in the Buckeye State surged the week ended Aug. 14 at 11,113 claims, up from 4,458 the previous week. Continued PUA claims were also up, reported the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, with 212,837 claims last week, up from 194,627 the week ended Aug. 7, ending a three-week streak of declines. Initial Traditional Unemployment claims dropped to 9,684 the week ended Aug. 14, down from 10,581 the previous week. Continued jobless claims also ticked down slightly to 142,750, marking seven weeks of declines. In the 74 weeks since the pandemic began affecting Ohio’s economy, the state has disbursed $12.5 billion in unemployment compensation to more than 1 million people, as well as $11 billion in PUA payments to 1.2 million people.
