COLUMBUS, Ohio — For at least the past 24 hours, Ohio State football found a new four-word phrase to replace “That Team Up North.” “My DMs are open.” Multiple Buckeyes posted social media messages with some version of that sentiment. They signaled they are available and willing to participate in the new era of income opportunities for college athletes. Earlier this week, Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order protecting the right of college athletes to earn income from their name, image and likeness. The Ohio legislature added a bill originally introduced by Senator Niraj Antani as an amendment to the state budget. Even if politicians had not come through, the NCAA on Wednesday finally removed its own prohibitions regarding NIL income. Athletic departments still are not paying athletes as employees.
