DAYTON, Ohio — Mr. Basketball could wear green. Next year, Malaki Branham will be in Scarlet and Gray. Ohio’s top individual high school basketball honor sometimes coincides with a commitment to the Buckeyes. Kaleb Wesson won it for Westerville South in 2017, Marc Loving of Toledo St. John’s Jesuit in 2013 and Jared Sullinger of Columbus Northland in 2009 and ’10. The list is much longer, but Branham could be added to that company in the next two weeks, once the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association and OHSAA announce this year’s winner. Branham’s 37 points in his final high school game, an emphatic third-quarter comeback that gave St. Vincent-St. Mary a 72-50 win vs. Columbus St. Francis DeSales the Division II state title game, should give him the edge on a competitive field alone.
