What Ohio State football’s quarterback competition can learn from J.T. Barrett’s 2014 example


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Long before Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm and Trevor Lawrence came along, Ohio State football had proven an inexperienced quarterback could lead a College Football Playoff run. When starting quarterback Braxton Miller suffered a season-ending injury in 2014 preseason camp, redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett took over. He experienced some early stumbles, notably in a loss to Virginia Tech in the second game of the season. However, Barrett eventually settled in and became a key reason why the Buckeyes won the Big Ten championship and advanced to the first College Football Playoff. Barrett suffered his own season-ending injury against Michigan, which made sophomore Cardale Jones the quarterback who actually beat Alabama and won the national championship against Oregon.
