NEW ORLEANS — Ohio State linebacker Justin Hilliard’s story of perseverance keep adding new, triumphant chapters. Pressed into starting action in the Big Ten championship game, the sixth-year senior from Cincinnati turned in the game of his life. Then he nearly topped it against Clemson in the College Football Playoff at the Sugar Bowl. He recorded eight tackles, including six solos, and helped the Buckeye defense change the complexion of an eventual 49-28 victory. After a career marked by injuries and hardships, Hilliard will now play for a national championship when the Buckeyes face Alabama in Miami on Jan. 11. Ohio State might not be in this position if not for Hilliard’s late-season boost while starting Sam linebacker Baron Browning dealt with a coronavirus-related absence.
