Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State football have backup quarterbacks with bright futures, but there’s no substitute for NFL-ready talent


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Clemson was forced to play Boston College on Saturday without quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he tested positive for the coronavirus. It turned to freshman backup DJ Uiagalelei, who is the expected starter in 2021. Uiagalelei was a five-star recruit rated as the No. 10 overall player and No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class. He led the Tigers to a win throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns on 30 of 41 passing along with 25 rushing yards and a score. But the win didn’t come easy. Clemson trailed 28-10 at halftime as the Eagles moved the ball offensively and got timely defensive stops, turning a fumble into a scoop-and-score at the end of the half. Boston College’s early game success even caught the eye of Ohio State as it watched former co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley exact some level of revenge from the Fiesta Bowl.…
