COLUMBUS, Ohio — Back in the spring, with Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields primed for a productive, full season, we asked what would have once been unthinkable. Could the Buckeyes have two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season? With Chris Olave as the deep threat and Garrett Wilson entering a high-volume role in the slot, could Fields’ efficiency and skill lead the receives to become the first OSU teammates to reach that number together? We quickly dismissed the idea, but not because of any disbelief in the receivers’ abilities. We simply expected Ohio State to keep rotating receivers as it traditionally has, first under Urban Meyer and lately under Ryan Day. Jameson Williams, the big incoming freshman crop and others would steal enough targets from Olave and Wilson that there was no chance both could hit that number. Maybe neither would.
