What Wyatt Davis’ departure means for Ohio State football, and who might replace him


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Inevitably, Ohio State football joined the list of major programs affected by a player opting out of the Big Ten’s still-unannounced makeup season. Wyatt Davis was already in line to be the first non-tackle offensive lineman selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. He did not need to play his redshirt junior season to enhance that status, and he can now focus full-time on joining Billy Price, Nick Mangold and LeCharles Bentley as interior linemen taken high in the draft. Ohio State still does not know if it will play a season in late fall, or winter, or spring. If and when it does, the absence of Davis may be conspicuous. Davis and center Josh Myers were expected to form the kind of interior combo that could blast open holes for quarterback Justin Fields and grad transfer running back Trey Sermon.
