Ohio State football’s Chase Young named Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Chase Young’s stellar final season for Ohio State football transcended excellence in his sport alone. Young was announced as the Big Ten’s 2019-20 Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year on Thursday. He won the honor in a vote of conference media and representatives. Young is one of 10 Buckeye athletes overall, including seven males, to win the Big Ten’s Athlete of the Year. The only other football player was Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George in 1996. A Heisman Trophy finalist, Young was selected No. 2 overall in April’s NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He won the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards as the nation’s top defensive player. He also won the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football as the Big Ten MVP and was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year.
