CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eli Apple’s offseason free agency journey ended up keeping him in the NFC South. The Carolina Panthers announced Thursday they have agreed to a one-year deal with the former Ohio State cornerback. Apple spent the past season-and-a-half with the New Orleans Saints after beginning his career as a first-round pick of the New York Giants in 2016. Apple originally agreed in principle on a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in March, reportedly for $6 million. However, the two sides were never able to finalize that agreement. Apple recorded 58 tackles with four passes defended and one fumble forced in 2019. The Saints declined to pick up his fifth-year option last May. Apple helped Ohio State win the first College Football Playoff national championship as a freshman in 2014. He was the Defensive MVP of the Buckeyes’ 2016 Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre Dame.
