COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football went into the Fiesta Bowl in January with a rare mix of explosive offensive balance and defensive dominance. The Buckeyes left that College Football Playoff semifinal loss against Clemson knowing they would be defined in part by falling short of the championship. According to ESPN, few teams who failed to win it all were better than the Buckeyes last season. ESPN ranked Ohio State’s 2019 team No. 5 on its all-time list of the best teams that did not win the national championship. The Buckeyes’ 1973 squad came in at No. 7.
