Missing Ohio State’s spring game, the best football day of the year in Ohio


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Football season typically signals the end of something. Leaves fall as football hits its seasonal stride, the game’s greatest games sometimes mixed with mud and snow. But not in the spring. Most places, baseball has cornered the market on “hope springs eternal” sporting rebirths each April. Not in Ohio. Not in a state where a practice football game in the spring once drew 100,000 fans. That’s why the spring game is my favorite day on the Ohio State football calendar — it’s the one time Ohio’s favorite game is played during the best time of the year. True, Ohio State openers in early September find average temperatures in the 70s. But they often are paired with overwhelmed non-conference opponents.
