Ohio State football freshman receivers confident they can seize immediate opportunity


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football’s lauded class of incoming freshmen receivers still have not put on pads or taken other competitive snaps in their first month on campus. Mookie Cooper, Julian Fleming, Gee Scott Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have begun that familiar transformation from heralded prospect to wide-eyed freshman to — they hope — quick learners making an immediate impact. Three senior starters recently moved on, opening up two-deep spots at all three receiver positions in the Buckeye offense. Ohio State coach Ryan Day reiterated last week that the development plan for those four players has an immediate deadline. At other positions, the question of whether freshmen have a chance to crack the two-deep is theoretical.
