Men’s hockey: Minnesota knocks Ohio State out of Big Ten lead

After Friday night’s series opening win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Minnesota Gophers found themselves in unfamiliar territory. And that was a good thing. “We didn’t know what to do,” Gophers coach Bob Motzko said after they broke a long string of one-goal games versus the Buckeyes, winning 6-3 at Mariucci Arena. “They’re playing music in the locker room, and we never play music until Saturday, but (team captain Tyler) Nanne said, ‘we don’t know what to do.’ ” The Gophers could savor the confusion after they got a pair of goals from Sampo Ranta, as well as individual goals from Brannon McManus, Ben Meyers, Jonny Sorenson and Jaxon Nelson to win the opener of their Big Ten series, and knock the Buckeyes out of first place.
