What Kerry Coombs’ return means for an Ohio State football cornerback room in transition


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football’s news release announcing Kerry Coombs’ hire as defensive coordinator touted his record of producing NFL cornerbacks. Five Buckeye cornerbacks under Coombs were first-round NFL Draft picks. Every starting cornerback in his previous tenure reached the NFL. Obviously, some of those Ohio State teams were blessed with a surplus of top-end cornerback talent. We will soon find out if the team Coombs inherits can say the same. It’s a roster with which Coombs is already familiar. Coombs has not yet commented on his return to Columbus. However, we know what he said about some of the current Buckeyes — and how he might run that position group — during his previous six-year stint under Urban Meyer.
