Ohio State football bringing Kerry Coombs back as defensive coordinator


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football has the missing piece of its defensive coaching staff. The Buckeyes will announce later today that Kerry Coombs will succeed Jeff Hafley as a defensive coordinator and secondary coach, per sources. Letterman Row first reported the hire was imminent. It is not yet known how Coombs’ duties will balance with that of Greg Mattison, who served as co-defensive coordinator last season. Exact salary terms are not yet known for Coombs, but he is expected to make at least the $1.1 million base salary Mattison was paid last season. That move has been long-rumored since Hafley’s departure to become head coach at Boston College. Coombs was serving as cornerbacks coach of the Tennessee Titans, whose season ended Sunday with a 35-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.
