For the first time in Hockey Day Minnesota event history, the Minnesota Gophers women’s team headed outdoors and took the ice despite sub-zero temperatures, battling No. 5 Ohio State at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. After losing just their second game in regulation to the Buckeyes the day before, the No.1-ranked Gophers rebounded on Saturday with a 2-1 victory to split the series. “This game mattered. It mattered deeply to our players and to our staff, fortunate to get it,” head coach Brad Frost said. “It makes it so nice when it’s in your hometown and you’re going to enjoy the experience, enjoy that as much as possible but to win, it’s not everything, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.” Temperatures dropped as low as 1 degree during the game.
