Women’s hockey: No. 1 Gophers upended by No. 5 Ohio State

Gabby Rosenthal scored a tie-breaking goal in the opening seconds of the second period, then added another later Friday night as fifth-ranked Ohio State beat the top-ranked Minnesota Gophers 4-1 in a Women’s WCHA game at Ridder Arena. Sophie Jaques and Rebecca Freiburger each has a goal and an assist for the Buckeyes (14-5-4, 9-3-3-1 WCHA), and goalie Andrea Braendli stopped 21 of 22 Minnesota shots. Taylor Heise had the lone goal in the first period for Minnesota (19-2-3, 11-2-2-1), which was outshot 34-22 by OSU. The Gophers were hampered by penalties, committing seven, while Ohio State had only two. Gophers goalie Sydney Scobee was pulled after two periods after surrendering all four goals on 22 shots. The teams will be outside when they face off again today at 4:30 p.m. at Minneapolis’ Parade Stadium. The game is part of the annual Hockey Day Minnesota festivities.
