As Kerry Coombs rumors persist, Ohio State football coach Ryan Day seeks defense’s next step


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day still has a significant vacancy on his coaching staff — at least publicly. At his first press conference since the Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson, Day would not confirm widespread speculation that Kerry Coombs will return to OSU as defensive coordinator when the Tennessee Titans’ season concludes. Secondary coach Coombs and the Titans play the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC Championship game. “We haven’t hired anyone yet,” Day said. “Still going through it all.” Former OSU co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was announced as Boston College’s head coach on Dec. 16. Thursday will mark one month since the Buckeyes knew they had a vacancy.
