Ohio State’s Ryan Day named First-Year Coach of the Year by Football Writers Association of America


COLUMBUS, Ohio — No Ohio State football players made the Football Writers Association of America’s freshman All-America team, but another rookie of sorts was honored. Ryan Day was named First-Year Coach of the Year by the FWAA. Day coached the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record, including a Big Ten championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Day was Ohio State’s first Big Ten Coach of the Year since 1979 and a finalist for multiple national coach of the year awards. He did have a head start on the honor, after serving as acting head coach for the first three games of the 2018 season while Urbana Meyer served a suspension. Only two Big Ten players made the Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America list, and both hail from Purdue: defensive end George Karlaftis and wide receiver David Bell.
