COLUMBUS, Ohio — in the span of one offseason, Ohio State football transformed from a liability into the catalyst for a return to the College Football Playoff. In the offseason ahead, the Buckeyes must reload again. Ohio State lost two players who might be the top NFL Draft selection at their positions in April: defensive end Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah. Also gone are OSU’s top two defensive tackles, its best linebacker and its lone starting safety, among others. In contrast to the offense, where plenty of stars return, the Buckeye defense needs stars to emerge in 2020. They also need newcomers and role players to establish the sort of depth up front and in the secondary that carried OSU through an undefeated regular season in 2019.
