GLENDALE, Ariz. — One of the biggest defensive plays of the night for Ohio State football resulted in one of the biggest losses of the night for the Buckeyes. Ohio State led 16-0 and Clemson faced third-and-5 near midfield. Slot cornerback Shaun Wade came on a blitz and sacked Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The play appeared to force a punt while Lawrence had his left knee twisted awkwardly. Officials reviewed the play, however, and charged Wade with targeting. (In this circumstance, targeting refers to leading with the crown of one’s helmet.) That meant the sophomore was ejected from that game. His replacement, Amir Riep, was flagged for pass interference soon after. Instead of punting, Clemson had new life due to the penalty. Lawrence exited the game for only one play.
