Ohio State football’s no-drama Justin Fields was the Buckeyes’ second football miracle in 7 years


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Justin Fields didn’t resurrect Ohio State football the way Joe Burrow resurrected LSU football. The Tigers hadn’t gone to a BCS or playoff bowl in six years when Burrow arrived as a transfer from Ohio State in 2018, Ed Orgeron’s future was unsteady after going 15-6 in the year-and-a-half since he replaced the fired Les Miles, and LSU hadn’t found the right quarterback for years. Burrow changed LSU, now 13-0 and No. 1 entering the College Football Playoff. Ohio State, now 13-0 and No. 2 heading into the playoff, didn’t need resurrecting. LSU was 54-22 in the six years pre-Burrow. Ohio State was 74-9 in the six years pre-Fields. But make no mistake. Fields saved Ohio State, at least for this season. Burrow won the Heisman Trophy.
