Audacious Ohio State fake punt decision briefly sparks Buckeyes in Big Ten championship game


INDIANAPOLIS – Down 14-0 to Wisconsin in the second quarter of the Big Ten championship game, Ohio State football needed a jolt. It got one, in the form of one of the gutsiest play calls of the season. Justin Field was sacked on second down to set up third and 17. J.K. Dobbins picked up eight yards on a rush, and Ohio State sent in its punt unit. But punter Drue Chrisman instead lobbed a pass to right end Luke Farrell, who gained 21 yards and a first down. Fields then hit Binjimen Victor for a 21-yard gain on the next plan, and J.K. Dobbins broke off a 24-yard run. Suddenly the Buckeyes were at the Wisconsin 8 with first and goal. However, Wisconsin stiffened. On third down, the Buckeyes nearly sacked Fields for a third time, and when he tried to scramble out of trouble, the ball was stripped…
