Chase Young extends Ohio State’s run of Chicago Tribune Silver Football winners


COLUMBUS, Ohio – As Ohio State football’s Chase Young makes his case as the best defensive player in the country, the Big Ten Conference coaches chose him as the league’s best player. Young was announced as the winner of the 2019 Chicago Tribune Silver Football award Friday morning. The junior defensive end totaled 19 points with nine first-place votes and one second from the 14 Big Ten coaches, who could not vote for their own players. Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor finished second with 12 points (three first-place votes). Young’s OSU teammates Justin Fields (two first-place votes) and J.K. Dobbins finished third and fourth. Young becomes the 19th Buckeye to win the award but sixth in the past eight years. He is the first defensive player to win since Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham, the 2009 co-winner with Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark.
