Ohio State football’s Chase Young a finalist for Bronko Nagurski Trophy


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football star Chase Young’s two-game suspension for an NCAA eligibility infraction may cost him his once-intriguing shot at the Heisman Trophy. However, as the junior defensive end prepares to return to the field Saturday against Penn State, his overall award candidacy remains strong. Young was announced Wednesday as one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation’s top defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The other finalists are Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown, Georgia safety J.R. Reed, Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield, Jr. Young’s 1.69 sacks per game are best in the country, and his total of 13.5 ranks second. The 6-6, 265-pound captain is one of the key reasons why Ohio Satte ranks first nationally in total defense, scoring defense, passing yards allowed and red zone defense.…
