If Rutgers can match its effort vs. Ohio State, why can’t it beat Michigan State, salvage something in nightmare season?


Rutgers’ last home Saturday this fall is guaranteed to be emotional. Many hope and expect it to be triumphant. And you know what? It could be victorious too. The Scarlet Knights got blitzed, as expected, by No. 2-ranked Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored two minutes into the game and then kept on scoring, rolling to a 56-21 romp at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. But even in overwhelming defeat, Rutgers acquitted itself better than the scoreboard suggests. The Scarlet Knights were wildly overmatched, but kept playing hard and scored as many points as anyone against the Buckeyes. They were able to enjoy a handful of positive moments – three touchdowns and a goal line stand! – and small successes – the 52.5-point spread was covered! – during an otherwise unpleasant afternoon.
