Ohio State routs Rutgers 56-21 and, yes, it could’ve been much worse


The fact that Ohio State walloped Rutgers on Saturday evening at SHI Stadium was hardly a surprise. After all, the line at kickoff had the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes listed as a 52 1/2-point favorite. So the Buckeyes’ 56-21 triumph was a win an unblemished Big Ten team with National Championship aspirations but a loss for the folks who gambled by laying the points. Rutgers had a few moments, cutting into Ohio State’s 21-0 lead with a touchdown late in the first quarter. Three plays after Lawrence Stevens recovered Adam Korsak’s punt, Isaih Pacheco rushed in from 26 yards for a touchdown and confetti rained down from the stadium’s upper deck. Late in the third quarter, Bo Melton turned in a highlight-reel grab by out-maneuvering his defender and racing in for a 45-yard touchdown reception from Johnny Langan with a minute remaining in the third quarter.
