LSU Passes Ohio State for No. 1 in Playoff Rankings


The significance of LSU’s five-point victory at Alabama trumped the impact of Ohio State’s 59-point victory over Maryland with the College Football Playoff Committee, which elevated the Tigers to No. 1 over OSU in their second set of rankings. Despite that 73-14 win Saturday in Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes fell from first to second in the Week 2 rendering by the 13 people who will determine the four participants in the playoff for college football’s national championship. It is the first time the No. 1 team in the Playoff rankings dropped out of the top spot without losing. LSU trailed OSU in the second spot when the rankings debuted last week, but used former Buckeye quarterback Joe Burrow’s 393 passing yards and three touchdown passes to defeat Alabama, 46-41, in Tuscaloosa.
