How Chris Chugunov stays mentally ready as Ohio State football’s backup quarterback


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day wasn’t sure how backup quarterback Chris Chugunov would see the field this season. He called this year’s quarterback room a “unique situation,” with Chugunov being the longest-tenured Buckeye. According to Eleven Warriors, the fifth-year senior has taken 96 snaps this season. Most came in the second half of a 73-14 win over Maryland, where he took 29 snaps. He threw for 103 yards and a score while completing all but three of his 11 pass attempts. “I was definitely happy that I got to sling it around a little bit on Saturday,” Chugunov said. “Usually, especially early in the season (when) I have to go in the game, we’re usually trying to kill clock.
