How Ohio State football’s passing attack responded to Ryan Day’s challenge against Maryland: Buckeye Breakfast


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Prior to Saturday, Ohio State football quarterback Justin Fields had not attempted more than 25 passes in any game. In the Buckeyes’ 73-14 victory over Maryland, Fields attempted 25 in the first half alone before yielding to backup Chris Chugunov. He completed 16 of them for an even 200 yards and three touchdowns while guiding OSU to a 42-0 halftime lead. Ohio State adopted the heavier passing load against Maryland’s 111th-ranked pass defense. The Buckeyes came into the game middle of the pack nationally in sacks allowed, at 2.38 per game. Fields was not sacked once despite the increased rate of pass attempts. “We challenge the protection,” OSU coach Ryan Day said. “We challenged the routes.
