COLUMBUS, Ohio — Up two touchdowns against overmatched Maryland on Saturday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day called for an onside kick in the first quarter. Why? Day said OSU special teams coach Matt Barnes, who held the same role at Maryland last season, saw an opening. The Buckeyes had worked on this particular version of a kick all week and said they’d give it a shot on their third kickoff of the game if the chance was there. Blake Haubeil executed it perfectly, booting a ball down the sideline to Chris Olave as smoothly as if he’d been a quarterback throwing the ball. “We thought that we had a real shot at it,” Day said, “and the guys practiced it during the week.
