COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State basketball team announced that it will wear jersey patches to remember Hall of Fame basketball player John Havlicek during its season opener on Wednesday. There will also be a moment of silence prior to the start of the game. Havlicek died in April at the age of 79. He averaged 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds during his three years as a Buckeye from 1959-62. He was a member of Ohio State’s only National Championship team in 1960 that also included Bobby Knight, Jerry Lucas and Mel Nowell. Following his career at Ohio State, he was the seventh pick in the 1962 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. As a Celtic, he won eight NBA Championships, had 13 All-Star selections and was named first-team All-NBA four times. He averaged 20.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 16 seasons.
